LAST ISSUE'S IMAGE (ISSUE
#54 )-
a Ikebana arrangement from the Sogetsu school.
LAST ISSUE'S IMAGERY
Sam and I spent a fascinating hour, on Sunday,
at a Japanese Sogetsu Ikebana floral arranging demonstration.
I particularly liked the 3 roses arrangement I featured
in yesterday's edition. The simplicity and lines
created a feeling of peace for me. We were told,
as the arrangement was being done, that the specific
angles of each piece were important.
I was fascinated, during the demonstration, at the
way the designer opened up certain of the flowers
and tore the greenery to get the sizes, shapes,
rhythms and angles exactly the way she felt they
were meant to be to fit what she was expressing.
See IKEBANA
TULIPS to see how she manipulated and opened
closed tulips to create what was necessary for a
particular arrangement. I am reminded of how I often
fear making bold changes in something that I think
is set.
Like these tulips, what might open up for me if
and when I go beyond timidity? How about you? These
tulips are certainly a visual image I can hold onto
and use as a reminder of what's possible.
A flyer distributed at the Morikami,
where three and four session Ikebana classes are
offered, provides the following definitions:
"IKEBANA is the art of flower arranging.
It is also a philosophy - a way of expressing the
interrelationship betweeen the self and the outer
world.
This art is a product of diligence and creativity
using flowers, branches, rocks, glass or any material
in order to share the beauty, harmony or challenge
of life.
SOGETSU IKEBANA, is a simple logical study
of three dimensional design devised for today's
life style and needs. A series of lessons, repeated
in many ways until the basic principles of desigin
and techniqure are thoroughly understood increases
individual creativity. Each lesson is a rewarding
experience."
